“"Having been through the intervention and treatment process myself, I understand where the addict is at and what concerns he is feeling about the future. My approach to the intervention process employs my unique experience, gathers strength and compassion from the family and presents the gift of treatment in a loving and persuasive manner. The end result is that the addict views the solution of treatment as an opportunity not a punishment".” - Steven Lodge

Boredom Kills

If you are experiencing early recovery, you might get the impression that the “fun” dimension of life is over. After all, how can you possibly hang out with your friends who are able to drink and use on a “normal” basis?

Well, the truth of the matter is that if you are in early recovery you probably should not be hanging around those friends. Addiction is far too powerful and the temptation too great. But does that mean you are relegated to house arrest? Of course not. Isolating in your own living environment can be daunting and easily lead to relapse. Isolation leads to boredom, a dangerous companion in early recovery. So what can you do?

If you are 12 step inclined, the easy alternative is going to a meeting. There you will find people similarly situated and ready to provide support and fellowship. If you connect with a sponsor, chances are that you will be given positive direction and a variety of ideas to keep your mind occupied and away from isolation and boredom. If you have the luxury of living in a large city, you might find out that you have the opportunity of selecting from hundreds, perhaps thousands, of meetings to choose from. If you do not find the right mix of people in one meeting, move on to the next until you feel comfortable.

You might also consider taking up new interests. If you are sports inclined, renew your athletic interests or take up a new sport. If you are intellectually suited, take some classes at a local community college or university extension program.

The point is that there is an amazing opportunity for a fulfilling life in sobriety but you need to take action. You are not alone in recovery, but if you choose to be alone you may be walking down a dangerous path.
