Cocaine Intervention
Cocaine is a white powdery substance that comes from the dried leaves of the coca plant. The drug is typically snorted, smoked or injected. Sometimes cocaine is mixed with baking soda to produce small “rocks” known as crack cocaine. Whether cocaine is used in its pure form, or manufactured into crack cocaine, it is a highly addictive drug that causes severe medical complications.
Cocaine is a stimulant that causes the heart to beat faster and elevates blood and body temperature. A single dose of cocaine or crack can cause a heart attack or stroke. Cocaine is so powerful that using it just one time can cause addiction.
If you have a friend or a family member that is addicted to cocaine, a cocaine intervention is something you might want to investigate. If you suspect cocaine use, but are not sure, you might look out for some of the typical red flags associated with cocaine use:
- · Paranoia
- · Isolation and detachment from friends and family
- · Inability to account for money (cocaine is an expensive addiction to maintain)
- · Sniffling, runny nose or nosebleeds
- · Weight loss
- · Restlessness and sleep problems
- · Increased blood pressure
- · Anxious behavior
- · Dilated pupils
- · Increased heart rate
- · Increased temperature
- · Lack of appetite
- · Excessive sweating
A cocaine intervention is oftentimes necessary since many addicts do not even recognize or admit they have a problem. Cocaine or crack cocaine addiction becomes compulsive and addictive because of the ensuing pleasurable feelings. Oftentimes, the main preoccupation of cocaine addicts is their quest for the next high. The discomfort of coming down from the drug (flooding of emotions, mood swings, etc.) is so severe, many addicts resort to almost any activity to maintain their addiction.
A properly conducted cocaine intervention presents the reality of the cocaine addict’s condition in a caring and non-judgmental manner. The intervention specialist works with the family and friends to provide a solution to the addiction. The cocaine intervention presents treatment as a gift and an opportunity to enjoy life rather than enduring it.
