Chronic Pain and Prescription Drug Dependence

Chronic Pain is a pain state that is persistent and where the cause of pain can
not be removed or otherwise readily treated. Chronic pain may be associated
with a long term medical condition such as autoimmune diseases (lupus or
rheumatoid arthritis), genetic disorders, neck or back trauma, or fibromyalgia.

The severity of chronic pain can range from mild to severe and the pain
intensity may vary during its course lasting several months to a lifetime.
Chronic pain is distinguishable from acute pain in that acute pain typically
lasts under three months and has an identifiable cause.

Chronic pain sufferers are typically prescribed pain medications for comfort and
continuation of daily function. It is important to understand that problems may
develop if pain medications are used beyond the short term. Tolerance to the
medications may increase and doses may be increased. Side effects from long
term pain medication usage may develop. Over time, chronic pain patients run
the risk of being dependent on their medication. The relief sought for the
chronic pain may very well develop into an addiction to the chronic pain
medication resulting in chronic pain syndrome and drug addiction.

Fortunately, there is treatment for those suffering from chronic pain and
addiction to pain medications. There are many treatment centers throughout the
United States that specialize in these concomitant disorders. For a listing of
treatment centers in California visit www.calrehabguide.com
<http://www.calrehabguide.com/>, or Google “chronic pain drug treatment”.

Here is an example of a chronic pain treatment center and what they have to
offer by way of treatment. Las Vegas Recovery Center offers a multifaceted
approach with their pain management/ addiction clients. Developing a treatment
plan specific to the needs of their clients, this treatment facility offers a
variety of modalities including acupuncture, massages, chiropractic services,
biofeedback, meditation, yoga, hypnosis, pilates, physical therapy, muscle
stimulation, psychotherapy, 12 step meetings and relapse prevention.

The goal of treating the chronic pain patient who is addicted to pain
medications is to provide relief for the pain, education and tools necessary so
that the pain does not return to an unmanageable level causing relapse back to
drug dependency. Treatment allows the patient to begin enjoying life rather
than enduring it.

Drug Intervention

Steve, we appreciate your proactive manner and sensitivity to the process. From the outset, it was extremely important to our family that we find the right mix of sensitivity, persuasiveness and empathy for our daughter. We found all of the above in the way you performed the intervention.
