Intervention For Alcoholic

If you are thinking about organizing an alcoholic intervention, there are a few key points that must be addressed before you go forward.

The first item on the list should be a decision regarding where the alcoholic will treat.  In addressing this issue, you need to figure out what level of treatment is required.   There are a variety of treatment levels beyond basic inpatient and outpatient treatment. They include intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, day treatment, minimum, medium, and high intensity inpatient. There is also medically monitored and medically managed inpatient. The initial assessment, which is based upon drug, family, occupational, educational, and social histories, will help determine what level of treatment is appropriate. Although there are differences in the levels of treatment, addiction treatment can be narrowed down to two basic forms: inpatient and outpatient.  A physician, therapist, addictions counselor or intervention specialist will be helpful in determining what level of care is most appropriate.

The next item of critical importance is the alcoholic intervention team.  These are the people who will actually participate during the alcoholic intervention.  You might consider participants from the following group:  family members, friends, employers/employees, clergy, physicians and just about anybody else who loves and genuinely cares about the alcoholic.  Firsthand experience with the alcoholic's behavior is important in the event the alcoholic denies the existence of his disease.  Intervention team members will be able to "enlighten" the alcoholic's denial should it be voiced.

A pre intervention meeting should be scheduled with all participants in attendance.  During this meeting, important details surrounding the alcoholic intervention will be finalized.  Examples of what might be discussed during this meeting include, but certainly are not limited, the following:  Where the alcoholic intervention will take place, how to insure that the alcoholic will get there, risks concerning the intervention, what will be said by the participants, how to handle anger and objections voiced by the alcoholic, what to do if treatment is rejected and how to close the session.

In view of the importance of the alcoholic intervention, at a minimum, you should consult an intervention specialist for assistance is resolving the multitude of issues relating to an alcoholic intervention.  If possible, it would be best to have a professional intervention specialist lead the intervention.

Steve, we appreciate your proactive manner and sensitivity to the process. From the outset, it was extremely important to our family that we find the right mix of sensitivity, persuasiveness and empathy for our daughter. We found all of the above in the way you performed the intervention.
